RERA index
A respiratory effort-related arousal (RERA) happens when someone briefly wakes up from sleep because their breathing slows down for 10 seconds or more. This short awakening allows normal breathing to resume.
These wake-ups usually aren’t remembered, but they can interrupt sleep cycles and make sleep less refreshing.
RERAs can only be found during a sleep study conducted in a clinic. During this study, special sensors check breathing and brain activity. They show that RERAs happen when airflow through the nose drops, followed by a burst of brain activity from waking up slightly.
